Haha wie geil, nochmal ANDREAS DAVIDS und gleich wieder ein Debut: Eine CD in Scheck-karten-Format! Toll. Habe ich auch schon ewig nicht mehr gesehen. Und dann noch wunderschön verpackt im bestempelten Karton und Oldschool-Kuvert mit echtem Siegel drauf! Sehr schön, minimalistisch, stylisch, haptisch ansprechend. Auf so einer CD passt nicht allzu viel drauf, aber für den 5 Minuten Song „Deep Space" hat es gereicht Und der hat es in sich. Ein gemütlich dahin wabern-der, verhallter Trip ins Unendliche. Den Zisch-Geräuschen nach scheinen wir mit höherer Geschwindigkeit unterwegs zu sein. Ich vermute Warp 4. Aber können die Maschinen dabei so leise sein, so beruhigend vor sich hin loopen? Schon verrückt, was technisch alles möglich ist.

Solely sporting the well extended title track spanning pretty much exactly 20 minutes of total playtime this brand new piece sees Mr. Davids on a well explorative tip starting from a place of surprisingly gritty and textural Dark Ambient which quickly dissolves into atmospheric and almost glacial Ambient dronings backed by slowly moving, deep and organic bass meanderings later accompanied by ethereal harmonics, glimpses of glistening hopefulness as well as ominous, well unsettling creaks and contrasting sequences of innate melancholia drowned and subdued in the washed out, gaseous blurriness of overall the sonic tapestry. Defo a recommended one for all collectors of strictly limited Deep Listening Music of almost score'esque qualities. Go check!

Dass ANDREAS DAVIDS der XOTOX ist, muss ich Isidor-Fanzine-Lesern wohl nicht extra erklären. Ich glaube, diese Besprechung ist für das Isidor-Fanzine ein Debut, es ist der allererste Tonträger in sympathischen 3"CD-Format! Und er präsentiert sich in schlicht-schönen Artwork, so wie alle 3"CD Veröffentlichungen des Labels Inner Demons Records aus Tampa, Florida, welches als Beschreibung bei Bandcamp „Fuck Trump & Desantis! I won't spread your hate! This noise kills fascists!" stehen hat. Sympathisch! Nun aber zur Musik.
ANDREAS DAVIDS verarbeitet hier in einem 20-Minuten-Track den Unterschied zwischen being alone und being lonely. Das ist nicht einfach zu übersetzen, aber der Sinn ist klar. Alleine zu sein kann man genießen. Is sind Momente, wo man sich mit einem Buch zurück zieht oder selbst kreativ wird. Sich einsam zu fühlen ist da eine ganz andere Hausnummer. Der Track beginnt mit einem Geräusch, das ich als Schnurren einer Katze auf dem gemütlichen Sofa identifizieren würde. Aber es dauert nicht lange, bis eine dunkle Soundwolke aufzieht, die eine innere Unruhe erzeugt. In dieser spielen sich die verschiedensten Dinge ab, Türen zu anderen Welten werden geöffnet und schließen sich unerwartet wieder - bist du zwischenzeitlich rein gegangen? Oder bist du vorsichtshalber stehen geblieben? Wenn letzteres: Du wirst nie erfahren, auf welcher Seite es dir besser geht. In der Realität ist alles, womit du nicht klar kommst, dein Problem. Danke für diesen Ausflug, ANDREAS!

Another fresh release cooked up by Andreas Davids - also known as the mastermind behind the famed Xotox project - is "Zukunftsromane", a mini-album put out on the digital circuit via the Audiophob label on August 23rd, 2k24. Rolled out over the course of five tracks Andreas Davids explores a score-oriented take on cold sci-fi Ambient introducing dripping alien caves, retrofuturist dronings, robo-mechanical movements and phaser blips in the opening tune "Der Letzte Funke" before progressing into hostile gaseous atmospheres, icey winds and tense repetitive bleeps with "Gravitation" whereas "Zeitsprung" aims at Ambient / ChillOut dancefloors with its airy and bouncy, yet deep Ambient Trance approach backed by a straight 4-2-the-floor rhythm signature. Furthermore "Interstellar" reflects upon subaquatic dronings and whirling, ever meandering filters in a sonic context once often connected with genre epicentres of the 90s like Liquid Sky Cologne / Electro Bunker Cologne and their various offsprings and side projects before "Der Letzte Funke (Leise)" seems to fully focus on what seem to be percussively dripping liquids in an enormously spaceous cavern backed by a quite organic and rather static midrange drone for a closing. INSPIRED BY A TRAGEDY is a collaborative album between anatoly grinberg (aka tokee) and andreas davids (mainly known from xotox). their obsession manifests as a cinematic odyssey through an enigmatic dystopian story, where silence can resound with intensity and noise can become inconsequential. the superficial weight of matter can dissolve into an intricate idm-ish loops, metamorphosing an entire composition into a meticulously crafted form. hypnotic repetition, crunchy beats and lush, expansive swells serve as the catalyst for their journey through ambient soundscapes, revealing new dimensions of auditory perception.
INSPIRED BY A TRAGEDY - the plot: a violent shudder sent the small plane plummeting towards the snow-capped mountains. the sole survivors pieced together the fractured memories of the inexplicable descent. days bled into a desperate struggle against the elements, panic a constant companion – a place where even the mountains whispered warnings. one terrifying night, an unseen force ripped through their camp. they fled in terror, leaving only a slashed tent and a chilling tableau. days later, rescuers found the scattered bodies, some bearing strange internal injuries, others with signs of radiation exposure. recovered journals hinted at strange lights in the sky and an oppressive sense of dread since the crash. theories swirled, but none explained the bizarre events. the incident became a haunting legend, a grim reminder of human fragility in the face of the untamed wilderness.

Am 22.06.2017 starb meine Mutter nach langer Krankheit. Vom Anruf aus dem Hospiz bis zu ihrem letzten Atemzug vergingen genau 5 Stunden.
Diese 5 Stunden waren die bis dato wahrscheinlich intensivsten und emotionalsten meines Lebens, von der Geburt meiner Tochter einmal
abgesehen. Diese 5 Stunden habe ich in Musik ausgedrückt, die Form des Umgangs mit meinen Emotionen, die mir am meisten liegt und auch die
einzige, die es schafft, mich mit dem Erlebten umgehen lassen zu können.
Ich habe 5x 1 Stunde, also insgesamt 5 Stunden Dark-Ambient erschaffen, um mit der Situation umgehen und irgendwie abschließen zu können.

Only a few weeks ago, I reviewed “The Inability to Be Happy” by Andreas Davids (Vital 1430). I wrote, ‘It’s not ambient as we know it, it’s not noise, it’s weird and experimental, and it has a beautiful flow’. It is no different on this release – five tracks of exactly one hour. It’s even more experimental and droney than ‘The Inability’, partially because Andreas took those 5 hours to let emotions and sounds take place in the compositions. So before we continue to review, let me state that this is a great release I like.
“5 Stunden” is triggered by a series of events surrounding the illness and passing of Andreas’ mother in 2017. From that period, the number five stuck in Andreas’ head, and he felt the need to do something with it. Next to be creative also to commemorate his mother and to find closure. So let me state the obvious that a lot of musicians have been triggered and inspired by the loss of a loved one. And yes, me too. So what Andreas does is not new, but it’s so damn personal. I almost feel guilty having to write that I like it or don’t like it. I mean, it’s his feeling, his personal journey towards closure, and he wants to share it with the world. What is there to like or not to like? There is only to be respect.
Five tracks of exactly an hour. Can that be interesting? Does it remain interesting when you play it? Isn’t it a full overkill of confrontational emotions? Yes on all of that. But at the same time, there is more then enough variation also to remain intriguing. Sure, there are fragments or phrases in the drones that may feel like they’re going on a bit too long, but that’s drones. As long as there is movement and the sonic structures are constantly interacting, it’s all good in my ears. I’ve been playing these tracks in a loop for a few days while I was working on things, and each time, I kept hearing new things. The general feeling the tracks generated for me was ‘hypnotic’ and ‘stasis’, and within a trance-like state of mind, I could keep on doing my things with some continuously moving sonic background.
The first hour has quite a robust and noisy layer in there. When the noise gets filtered a repetitive structure enters the composition, but this part is the most intrusive of the lot. The second hour reminded me a bit of zoviet:france. Not the highly experimental works, but the nothingness of some of their work, Like ‘What Is Not True’. The third one continues with that atmosphere, but more harmonics get added in synth sounds. Something that would perfectly fit a label like Cyclic Law or early Cold Meat. The fourth hour is super minimal and actually only has two states of ‘being’: the repetitive structure in the beginning and, after half an hour, the resonance-driven ambient harmonic structure. It’s super minimal but very strong. The fifth and final hour of “5 Stunden” is probably the most formed and crystallized at moments harmonic and even orchestral.
And then suddenly, five hours have passed. And you know you’ve heard something personal and unique. But you can’t remember that first hour, so you press play again. It’s what I did. So there’s no shame in that. It’s a significant release, and even when it’s strange to rate things as stated earlier, that 2nd hour is my favourite. (BW)

Once again put out on the circuit via Florida-based Inner Demons Records is "The Inability To Be Happy", the latest, limited to 42 hand-numbered copies 3" CD-r release edition by Andreas Davids, probably better known to many under his Industrial x EBM x HardTechno guise that is Xotox. Released on February 14th, 2k24 the sole and singular, albeit 20 minutes spanning title track sees Andreas Davids serve an amalgamation of deep, droning and strangely comforting Dark Ambient melancholia, cold atmospheric crackles, echoes of echoes of Clicks'n'Cuts and - most surprisingly - short outbursts of angelic, ethereal and outerworldy choir layers as well as monotonous and therefore time-dissolving single tone repetitions and minimalist Electronica structures which all fall in place to provide a calm, solemn and slightly ruminant late night trip for all fans and followers of hypernocturnal Deep Listening Music. Get.

The first release I’m playing is Andres Davids’ “The Inability to be Happy.” Andreas, who some of you know from his main project, XOTOX, does stuff here that wouldn’t really fit the XOTOX moniker. The sounds he releases under his own name are way more experimental in nature and definitely less danceable, so please don’t see this as an XOTOX side project. See it as a different side of the human Andreas Davids.
Even though the 20-minute track contains rhythm, droney layers, minimal melodies and some weird-ass noises of unknown origin (it’s not guitar, is it?), it’s hard to pinpoint the style. It’s not ambient as we know it, it’s not noise, it’s weird and experimental, and it has a beautiful flow. At moments, it gets a bit of a dubby feeling, which—even though I don’t really like dub—I actually like.
I will write some words I hope Andreas will forgive me for writing down, but if “The Inability to be Happy” is the result of an unhappy Andreas, then making music like this would be a perfect form of therapy because listening to the result everyone would become happy, even Andreas. So, with that in mind, I can only come up with a paradoxal emotional charge of this release. Well done my friend! (BW)

I had previously reviewed Davids' “Grey,” "Landscapes,” and "Digitale Asche," and enjoyed them, so I was interested to see what he had in store this time. For those unfamiliar with Andreas Davids, he hails from Germany and also records under the name Xotox. This disc consists of one track, titled "The Inability to Be Happy." If Davids is going for a sense of unease, he nails it.
You can think of this track as a series of interconnected movements. We open with grinding sawtooth drone that would be quite at home in a dystopian film. Indeed, the entire feel is cinematic and works well to evoke a sense of foreboding. This then gives way to an almost whimsical interlude that maintains some of the dark feel of the previous movement while adding in what sounds like synthesized xylophone melody. This slowly morphs into more of the cinematic, orchestral feel before bringing back the previous melody as a reprise. This then gives way to a slow beat and more sawtooth waves and chirping noises.
The entire thing hangs together well as a cohesive composition, which can sometimes be a rare thing in experimental music. There is a lot going on throughout, which keeps everything interesting, but it still manages to evolve along the way until you find yourself wondering how Davidsmanaged to guide you along without you even noticing the changes in scenery. If you like cinematic dark ambient with a touch of noise thrown in for good measure, this will be right up your alley. Overall, this is the best thing I have heard from Davids. Well done and highly recommended. This album weighs in at around 20 minutes and is limited to 42 copies.

Artista sperimentale della Renania Settentrionale-Vestfalia, il cinquantaduenne Davids ha già collezionato in sette anni di attività discografica più collaborazioni con nomi di spessore come Anatoly Grinberg e Sven Phalanx, pubblicando lavori (una ventina in totale) anche per etichette blasonate come la Infacted e la Ant-Zen. L'EP in esame, composto unicamente dai 20 minuti della title-track, è già il quarto (esordio assoluto compreso) nel formato 3" in edizione di sole 42 copie che il musicista tedesco realizza attraverso la statunitense Inner Demons, segno di come il sodalizio con l'etichetta sia solido e duraturo. L'incapacità di essere felici del titolo viene sonorizzata dal Nostro attraverso vibranti ronzii noise su grigie ambientazioni solcate da sottili glitch, cenni melodici fra meccaniche meste, battiti metallici ossessivi e porzioni ansiogene, coi singoli temi che ritornano ciclicamente, come a ribadire sensazioni tutt'altro che confortanti. Senza colpi di scena, Davids confeziona un apprezzabile e didascalico esercizio di stile che dipinge con colori freddi lo sconforto racchiuso in un titolo inequivocabile, per una release "minore" che non manca di spunti interessanti.

Die Frösche - Sumpflärm 01
Die Frösche, das sind der Leipziger Musiker und DJ Christian Bergmann (<1979>, Dj Frequen-C,...) und der aus der Nähe von Paderborn stammende Andreas Davids (XOTOX, Natura Est,...).
Beide teilen ihre Leidenschaft für die grünen Amphibien und beschlossen in einer lauen Sommernacht vor fast genau 10 Jahren, zusammen ordentlich Sumpflärm zu
machen - "Rhythm and Frog" war geboren.

With “The Folly of Mars”, their fourth full album (and second for Cyclic Law), Tony Young and Andreas Davids explore man’s desire to conquer outer space at all cost; regardless of the more pressing issues that should be first resolved on their home planet. Billions of dollars have funded the urge of mans desire to populate the red planet and further explore its neighbouring satellites, whilst millions of people starve on their home soil. Climate change is ravaging the Earth in what is now our sixth mass extinction event; and whilst the quest for knowledge should be applauded, it has become a banner of ego for the small percentage of people who hoard the largest wealth. Over the course of six tracks, Natura Est ask the listener to contemplate the swathes of species that are dying out as our planet screams for urgent assistance; whilst the privileged few squander their riches, displaying a set of questionable morals that promote nothing but self-interest. Nature is all, all is nature; but who really is the beast?

Für Sven Phalanx war es eine Herzenssache, diesen Klassiker von 1978 zu covern bzw. den gegebenen Respekt entgegenzubringen und ihm, zusammen mit seinem musikalischen Partner Andreas Davids und dem kreativen Kopf der Band Different Souls (Joachim Müller), stilecht den eigenen Stempel aufzudrücken. Modern, wuchtig und rauh, aber dennoch das Original nicht aus den Augen verlierend, wird diese Version die Tanzflächen zum Beben bringen.

Gesang und Text stammen von niemand Geringerem als dem Dysterfolk-Act UTOPIAE (Konrad Schubert) und das Ergebnis zeigt einwandfrei, dass diese Kombination wunderbar funktioniert. Anatoly Grinberg and Andreas Davids - Silence + Noise
silence + noise' is a collaborative album between anatoly grinberg (aka tokee) and andreas davids (mainly known from xotox). it's an aural meditation in which the two artists search and explore the hidden meaning of silence and noise. their obsession turned out into a cinematographic journey of an unknown dystopian future, where silence can be present and loud, and noise can be invalid. the superficial heaviness of matter can ending up in an tiny little idm-ish loop and turn an entire track into a finely crafted form. lush swells of hypnotic repetition is the fuel for their exploration of ambient fields. be quiet and enjoy the journey.

Am 06.12.2020 erschien mein Tape "Isolation" auf Mahorka.

"The sore losers"...
ist ein film aus dem jahr 1997. Regisseur Mike McCarthy entführt den zuschauer in seinem werk in eine welt voll von sci-fi, trash, musik und vielem mehr. mittlerweile zählt der film zu den absoluten kultfilmen des genres und so wurde es zeit für eine wiederveröffentlichung.
"the sore losers" erscheint im september 20018 als re-release auf blu-ray und wird auch den dazugehörigen soundtrack mit dabei haben.
wer den film im original mit deutschen untertiteln anschaut weiss jetzt auch, dass eben diese deutschen untertitel von mir stammen.

ein rein digitales release auf verschwinden. dark ambient, minimal noise und sehr viel gefühl...

das amerikanische label inner demons records veröffentlicht mein dark ambient/experimental-stück "grey" auf einer limitierten (42 stück) 3"-CDr. die verpackung besteht aus bedrucktem, silberfarbenen karton, der sich zusammen mit der 3"-CDr in einer einsteckhülle befindet. beim label gibt es noch viele andere interessante releases - ein blick lohnt sich immer.

"hackedei"
unter diesem pseudonym habe ich einige tracks produziert, die am besten als "elektro-industrial-ambient mit trash-einschlag" bezeichnet werden können. das tape-release ist beim genialen münchner label raketenbasis haberlandstrasse erschienen und wird in einer sehr schicken und passenden verpackung unter die leute gebracht.
auch für die anderen releases ist raketenbasis haberlandstrasse ein blick wert.
neufnoir records
zwischen 1998 und 2006 (am intensivsten wohl zwischen 1999 und 2003) betrieb ich das kleine aber feine d.i.y.-tape- und cdr-label neufnoir-records. angedacht um meine eigene musik zu veröffentlichen, kamen schnell einige andere künstler hinzu.
die arbeit an und mit meinem musikprojekt xotox nahm aber so viel zeit in anspruch, dass ich neufnoir records auf unbestimmte zeit auf eis legen musste.
